Winnipeg gives up three-goal lead in third period to fall to 0-3 in pre-season play

Slow but steady

The game kicked off with a steady pace, with both teams earning their fair share of quality chances. Winnipeg was able to kill of three straight penalties to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes, with Edmonton getting a slight edge in shots, 11-9.

second in command

The second period is where the Jets would finally come to life, scoring three goals in the frame. J.C. Lipon got things started for the home side, scoring his first goal of the pre-season thanks to a nifty pass from linemate Chase De Leo.

Man of few words

Lipon, who has shown both his grit and scoring touch so far this pre-season, had little to say after the game, even though he was happy to find the back of the net.

jets take 3-0 lead in to third

Ben Chiarot made it 2-0 for the Jets at the 12:32 mark of the second period and Andrew Copp added another to make it 3-zip for the Jets heading in to the third period. With a record of 0-2 prior to puck drop, things looked good for Winnipeg to earn their first win of the pre-season.

A major oil leak

But Edmonton started to put on the pressure in the third period. The Oilers cut the lead to 3-2 near the midway mark of the frame with two quick goals just over a minute apart. Anton Lander scored first, followed by a nice tip-in marker from Lauri Korpikoski that fooled Ondrej Pavelec and cut the lead to just one.

Short, but not so sweet

On a night where the Jets sent the Oilers to the power play eight separate times, it was a short-handed marker of all things that evened the score at 3-3. Rob Klinkhammer snuck in behind the Jets defence and put home a rebound to give the Oilers life and all the momentum.

Penalty issues? Not exactly

Jets head coach Paul Maurice was asked whether he believed, despite it being a pre-season game, eight penalties on his team was at all an issue he should be worried about.

The final dagger

The Oilers completed the comeback in overtime with a goal from another Anton, this time Anton Slepyshev, who took a pass from Andrew Miller before depositing the puck in to an open net.

It wasn’t exactly a game Winnipeg will want to remember but it did offer a bit of a glimpse in to the the young talent the Jets have in their system. A number of young players trying to make the team stood out, and Maurice agreed competition for those final spots is starting to really heat up.

a good wingman

Nic Petan, who was moved to the wing, put in a solid effort playing in a new position. He looked poised on a number of his shifts, chipped in with an assist on Copp’s goal and finished the game a plus-1. Here’s what he had to say about the position change:

Moving forward

The Jets will move on from this one as they prepare for their next game; a road tilt against the Minnesota Wild Sunday night. But not all is lost as goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who made 35 saves in the loss, said there is a lesson to be learned, especially for the young players getting their first look at the NHL.
